About DAX

The Detroit Air Xpress, or DAX for short, is a pilot express bus service, that connects Downtown Detroit to DTW airport with the city’s first express shuttle bus that runs between the two. The new bus service is an idea created by the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan (RTA), and operated by Michigan Flyer. This pilot service is funded by a $2.5 million grant through the Federal Highway Administration’s Carbon Reduction Program, which was administered by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG).

Located near 1119 Washington Blvd., between Michigan Avenue and State Street.

DTW Airport

Evans Terminal - Ground Transportation Center

From baggage claim, go up two levels to the skywalk or one level if not picking up luggage. Cross the skywalk; then, enter elevators on left side, and take down to ground level. Go out the doors next to elevator and find DAX in stall 1-2.

McNamara Terminal - Departures

We pick up and drop off all passengers on the Departures Level (also known as Level 3) of the McNamara Terminal. Follow signs for “Ticketing/Check-In" or "Public Transit." They will help guide you to our location for both drop-offs and pick-ups on Level 3 (a.k.a. Departures Level). Our stop is just outside of Door 1 (labeled "International Ticketing") going toward the ramp. You will see a sign of transit options.

FAQs

When and how often does DAX run?
The service will operate up to 16 round-trips per day between 3:30 a.m. and 11 p.m. every day of the week, including holidays. The expected travel time is 30 to 50 minutes one way, depending on traffic conditions and your terminal of departure or arrival. Please be aware: construction along the route may impact travel times.
What is the cost of the service? How can I book tickets?
Tickets purchased in advance will cost $6. Tickets purchased at the time of boarding will cost $8. Discounts are available for frequent riders, seniors, people with disabilities, and students. Tickets are available at the bottom of this page or on the website homepage. Riders can also purchase tickets at the door, subject to availability.
Where does the DAX service stop?
The downtown Detroit stop is located at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and State Street on the west side of the street. The stop is conveniently located near existing transit services, including the Rosa Parks Transit Center, DDOT, SMART, the Detroit People Mover, MoGo bike share services, and the RTA QLINE. DAX will stop at both McNamara and Evans Terminals at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW). The McNamara Terminal stop will be located at the dedicated drop-off and pick-up point at the Departures area. The Evans Terminal stop will be located at the Ground Transportation Center.
Will DAX make stops beyond downtown Detroit and the DTW airport terminals?
Not at this time. DAX is currently designed to be a nonstop service for riders. This direct route has been identified as a priority through RTA surveys and reports. With additional funding, the RTA plans to strategically invest in other express bus pilot services throughout Southeast Michigan's four-county region.
What amenities does DAX provide?
DAX buses are designed for the comfort of travelers and regular commuters. The buses are equipped with comfortable pleather seats, armrests and footrests, ample leg room, WiFi, USB charging ports, individual lighting, a bathroom and more. Undercarriage storage is available for luggage.
Is DAX wheelchair accessible?
The buses are ADA-compliant and can accommodate two wheelchairs. Wheelchair lifts are available for easy boarding.
Are bikes, e-bikes, and electric scooters allowed on the bus?
Riders are permitted to travel with one bike per person, subject to storage availability; it will be counted as a checked bag. Bikes must be broken down and contained in a leather, canvas, bicycle box, or other carrying case. Bikes will not be transported unless stored in one of these containers. E-bikes and electric scooters are not allowed on DAX.
Are pets or service animals allowed on DAX?
Pets are not allowed on DAX. However, we welcome service animals on board for customers with disabilities. Service animals may ride in the passenger compartment of the bus at no additional charge. Can children ride DAX without an adult?
Children traveling alone between the ages of 12-17 can travel by filling out Michigan Flyer's unaccompanied minor form. An adult must be present at drop-off and pickup and show a valid ID at their destination. Read more about Michigan Flyer's unaccompanied minors policy at michiganflyer.com/unaccompanied-minors.
What is the baggage policy for DAX?
Riders are allowed to store two suitcases underneath the motorcoach and one personal item that fits in the overhead compartment. Anything additional is $10.
How do I use my Frequent Rider pass book?
Frequent Rider pass book holders are available to customers and are ideal for frequent flyers and airport employees who commute regularly. A book of 10 passes is available for $50 ($5 one-way) and a book of 50 passes is available for $100 ($2 one-way). However, pass book holders are not guaranteed a seat on the bus. Please book a ticket online in advance to reserve your seat.
How can I change your bus ticket?
Tickets can be changed under the ‘Change Your Reservation’ button on the home page. Enter your email and ticket number, and then navigate over to ‘Manage Booking’. From there, you can modify the date and time of your ticket. The direction of travel must stay the same.
I lost an item. Who should I contact?
If you believe you lost an item or left something on board, call the Michigan Flyer office at (517)-333-0400. Michigan Flyer will attempt to contact the bus driver and find your missing item(s). Or, if more than a day has passed since your trip, call Michigan Flyer and they will check the lost and found area to see if your missing item(s) was turned in.
When did the Detroit Air Xpress (DAX) service launch?
Detroit Air Xpress (DAX) launched on March 25, 2024. During the first year of service, DAX was funded through a Carbon Reduction Program grant provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Michigan Department of Transportation, and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG). The RTA currently operates the service with funding from the Federal Transportation Administration and the State of Michigan.
Who operates the DAX buses?
Michigan Flyer operates the DAX buses, while the RTA of Southeast Michigan manages and provides the DAX service. Michigan Flyer is a Michigan-based inter-city bus service that runs luxury coach buses. The service travels along I-94 to deliver passengers from one destination to another in about 30-50 minutes.
What do the DAX buses look like?
Detroit Air Xpress buses are decaled with DAX on the side. However, when vehicle maintenance is needed, Indian Trails may replace the DAX-decaled bus with an Indian Trails-decaled bus with DAX signage posted
